Before you cook asparagus, you want to prepare it properly to ensure proper cooking and flavor. First, rinse all the asparagus spears in water and allow to drain for 5 minutes. Next, break the spear in your hands. This will get rid of the bitter end of the asparagus that doesn’t taste very good. Throw that end away, and then line up the spear that you broke in half with several others. Cut of the ends of the asparagus to make them the same length as the first one.
When steaming asparagus, place several spears in a steaming basket and bring a pot of water to boiling. Allow to steam about 5 minutes, or until the asparagus turns bright green and becomes crisp-tender. Remove basket and turn of the heat. Drain the water, and allow asparagus to stand for a couple of minutes to allow the water to drip off.
For grilling, clean the grates as you normally would with your grill brush, and turn the heat on one side of the grill to medium. After you allow the grill to heat up for five minutes, place each spear crosswise on the grates so they don’t fall through. Grill them until they are slightly blackened on one side, about 3 minutes, then turn over to cook the other side. Take them off the heat with your tongs and place them on a plate with butter, mayonnaise, or other condiments for a delicious flavor unlike any other.
Roasting is another delicious method for cooking asparagus. It enhances the flavor and is good with meat of fish. To roast asparagus, turn the oven on to 425 degrees. After the oven has reached the desired temperature, place asparagus in a large pan and sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and coat lightly with olive oil. Place in oven and cook for 45 minutes, or until asparagus has changed color and has softened.
All of these easy cooking methods provide a delicious side dish for your favorite spring dishes, so try them tonight with your favorite meats or fish.
